Hello!
I am a visual artist based in London UK working at the intersection of art, ethnography and sociology. My work revolves around questions about my identity formation, as well as the societal structures of domestic life and space. I am intrigued by everyday acts and practices that define our identities and the banality of these processes, searching for how identities collide and are negotiated in private and public spaces.
As an artist, I am always looking for media that best suits my visual research and questions, encompassing traditional drawing and painting techniques as well as digital techniques such as photography, 3D modelling, and digital fabrication. My studies in Fine Art (University of Tehran) and Architecture (University of Westminster) have given me representational tools that go beyond mere representation; creating artworks that engages with its surrounding and reflects on human conditions, such as identity, gender and spatial politics.
In my works, such as the “Looking in the Mirror” and “Duet” collections, I have directly navigated my immediate surrounding, using visual ethnography to reflect on the self, memory and familial relations. In my MA thesis project “Impossible Woman, Impossible Space, Impossible Time”, I created a body of work that examines the domestic as well as public space as a place where identities emerge, using visual narratives, poetry, forensic ethnography, 3D modelling merged with 2D traditional drawings. This collection is presented in 7 fragments, where visual stories unfold in a place of memory and imagination.
I have worked professionally as a visual artist for the past 13 years, exhibiting my work across different platforms and exhibitions internationally, and participating in workshops, residencies and interviews, such as “The Image-maker in Residence” with Sociological Review here in London, and “The Artists’ Forum” in Tehran. As an aspiring visual artist who uses research as an integral part of my work process, I have had the privilege to broaden my academic scope with an MA in London, graduating with distinction and being awarded the “Surjit Cheema Award for Critical and Comprehensive Written Thesis” (Commendation) and “Jila Golzari Award for Engagement with and Contribution to the course”.
Having lived as an artist I have come to understand that there are stories that need be told; if not they will be simply forgotten and erased. What inspires me is these stories that need to be told, and I believe visual art as a medium has the ability to best capture essences and impact others to see what’s hidden.
